MGM Springfield Receives Additional Exclusive Neighborhood Endorsements
SPRINGFIELD (MA) February 14, 2013 — MGM Resorts International today announced that its MGM Springfield proposal has received additional exclusive endorsements from Indian Orchard Citizen's Council and Old Hill Neighborhood Council.
Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts President and Chief Marketing Officer and MGM Springfield President, said, "We are extremely proud to have received the exclusive endorsement of the Indian Orchard Citizens Council and the Old Hill Neighborhood Council. The support of these key organizations, along with others that have chosen to endorse our proposal, further connects MGM to the community in a very meaningful way. At MGM, we strongly believe in being a good corporate citizen, and this begins with working hard to earn the support and trust of those people who we hope to soon call our neighbors."
Sandy Babbie, President of the Indian Orchard Citizen's Council, said, "We believe that MGM has the resources, experience and vision to successfully engage this project for the long-term revitalization of downtown Springfield."
In a letter to MGM, Ethel Griffin, President of the Old Hill Neighborhood Council, said: "Your willingness to meet our community neighbors and explain your plans for building and hiring residents from the Springfield area proved to be a winning combination for the Old Hill and Springfield."
MGM had previously announced the exclusive endorsement of the South End Citizens Council's. Included in the Jan. 30 announcement, Leo A. Florian, President of the South End Citizens Council stated, "MGM has created a proposal that is respectful of our neighborhood's unique fabric and history, and also will bring 3,000 much-needed permanent jobs, revenue and vitality to this entire city. Their level of community engagement across this city has been unprecedented and it clearly shows in the amount of care and detail that has gone into this proposal."
MGM officials have been meeting with residents and business owners for months to discuss the MGM Springfield proposal and answer questions. MGM Resorts executives and the MGM Springfield team have met with 12 other neighborhood councils across the city over the past several months. They plan to meet with the remaining councils in the weeks ahead. These neighborhood meetings/presentations have been a way to inform, educate and hear from different communities throughout the entire city to better understand their needs and their priorities.
"We have said from the beginning of this process that MGM would never come into a community and presume to know what's best for them," said Hornbuckle. "By investing this time in listening to residents, business owners and community leaders, we believe we've put forward a project that is worthy of this city and its people."
Babbie added, "We believe that MGM affords Springfield its best opportunity for a truly neighborhood-based redevelopment solution."
The Indian Orchard Citizen's Council highlighted the key reasons for its endorsement, siting MGM's willingness to engage the entire Springfield community and construct its proposal around that input; plans to utilize local venues; purposeful design to drive foot traffic around local business; status as a world leader in entertainment that will attract top billed entertainment; and demonstrated commitment to city-wide investments in public safety.
The endorsement was made official prior to MGM Resorts submitting its detailed response to the City of Springfield's RFQ/P Phase II of the casino selection process. A copy of the endorsement letters were submitted earlier this month as part of MGM's response.
The Indian Orchard Citizen's Council and the Old Hill Neighborhood Council are community organizations with primary goals of preserving and improving the quality of life in the neighborhoods. Indian Orchard neighborhood is located in the northeastern corner of the city, beginning about four and a half miles from the Central Business District. The Old Hill neighborhood is located one mile east of the Central Business District.
The MGM Springfield proposal also has been endorsed by the Springfield Patrolman's Union and the Association of Springfield Firefighters.
MGM Springfield is proposed for about 10 acres of land between Union and State streets, and Columbus Avenue and Main Street. MGM is seeking the Western Massachusetts gaming license. Since unveiling plans in August to develop MGM Springfield, a more than $800 million world-class residential, retail, dining and entertainment district, MGM Resorts continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the entire City of Springfield and its existing infrastructure.
