Puerto Rican Cultural Center Endorses MGM Springfield

SPRINGFIELD (MA) March 22, 2013 – MGM Resorts International today announced that its MGM Springfield proposal has received the exclusive endorsement of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center (PRCC). The PRCC is a widely respected organization that has been advocating for, and working with the Puerto Rican community and other Latino residents in Western Massachusetts for over 33 years.

Based on the 2010 US Census, 38.8 % of the City of Springfield's residents identify themselves as of Hispanic or Latino origin, and 35.5% say a language other than English is spoken at home.

"We are thrilled to have the endorsement of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center,” said Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts President and Chief Marketing Officer and MGM Springfield President. "MGM continues to believe that to be truly successful Springfield's renaissance must embrace and promote the city's strong, diverse community. Diversity is a cornerstone of our corporate mission."

MGM Springfield representatives have held more than 300 community meetings since their August 2012 announcement. These meetings/presentations have been a way to inform, educate and hear from different communities throughout the entire city to better understand their needs and their priorities. MGM’s commitment to diversity has resonated with many.

Ivette Cruz, PRCC's President and CEO said, "MGM has put forward a proposal that addresses many opportunities and support for the entire city; great jobs, businesses, community and more. Their extraordinary effort to inform and to gather input from organizations and residents from all walks of life is commendable. This effort has demonstrated their understanding and commitment to a superior transparent and participatory process that includes all. They are not about a segment, a specific group or a geographical area; they are about all of us, together."

A majority of MGM's 62,000 employees worldwide identify themselves as a minority. Last year, MGM Resorts was named one of the "2012 Best Companies for Diversity" by Hispanic Business Media. In addition, MGM has received awards for their commitment to diversity from Equal Opportunity magazine, Latina Style magazine, Black Enterprise magazine, Diversity Inc. magazine, the Humans Rights Campaign and the Association of Diversity Councils. MGM was the first company in the gaming and hospitality industry to voluntarily adopt a formal diversity and inclusion policy. MGM has increased and maintained the overall representation of women (more than 40%) and minorities (more than 30%) in the diversity profile of their management team for more than half of the past decade. Since 2001, through its Supplier and Construction Diversity programs, MGM Resorts has spent a cumulative total of nearly $3 billion with MWDBE suppliers and contractors (i.e., minority-owned, women-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises).

The Puerto Rican Cultural Center, Inc. was founded in 1978 with a mission to advocate and provide a forum for educational, leadership and economic development programs and enable access to benefits from available resources to the Puerto Rican and other Spanish speaking communities and promote cultural awareness.

MGM Springfield is proposed for 14.5 acres of land between Union and State streets, and Columbus Avenue and Main Street. MGM is seeking the sole gaming license in Western Massachusetts. Since unveiling plans in August to develop MGM Springfield, an $800 million world-class residential, retail, dining and entertainment district, MGM Resorts continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the entire City of Springfield and its existing infrastructure.
