Greater Springfield Branch of NAACP Recommends MGM Springfield
SPRINGFIELD (MA) April 1, 2013 – MGM Resorts International today announced that its MGM Springfield proposal has received the exclusive recommendation of the Greater Springfield Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). For months, The Greater Springfield Branch of the NAACP, has been engaging with representatives from each casino proposal to measure the companies' commitments to communities of color.
The announcement was made after a vote of the Greater Springfield NAACP membership at their regularly scheduled membership meeting last week at the Spring of Hope Church Of God In Christ in Springfield.
Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts President and Chief Marketing Officer and MGM Springfield President, said, "MGM is deeply honored to receive the recommendation of the Greater Springfield Branch of the NAACP. We thank Reverend Swan for his confidence, and we look forward to working with this widely respected organization to advance a strong and diverse workforce at MGM Springfield."
Immediately following the vote, Reverend Talbert W. Swan, II, President of the Greater Springfield branch of NAACP, said, "We believe that MGM's longstanding commitment to diversity, as well as its strong economic development plan makes them the best partner to assist in the revitalization of Downtown Springfield. MGM has an impressive record of working with minority-owned vendors and relying on hiring practices that ensure maximum participation among communities of color. MGM's vision most closely aligns with ours for the next chapter in Springfield's history."
MGM Resorts was the first company in the gaming and hospitality industry to voluntarily adopt a formal diversity and inclusion policy. MGM has increased and maintained the overall representation of women (more than 40%) and minorities (more than 30%) in the diversity profile of its management team for more than half of the past decade. Since 2001, through its supplier and construction diversity programs, MGM Resorts has spent a cumulative total of nearly $3 Billion with MWDBE suppliers and contractors (minority-owned, women-owned and disadvantaged business enterprises).
MGM Resorts has made diversity a cornerstone of its corporate creed. The company's efforts have been recognized by well-known publications and organizations such as Equal Opportunity magazine, Latina Style magazine, Black Enterprise magazine, Diversity Inc. magazine, the Humans Rights Campaign and the Association of Diversity Councils.
Hornbuckle added, "We are extremely proud of our strong record on diversity and inclusion. This recommendation is a strong validation that we have the best proposal for every neighborhood of Springfield."
Founded in 1909, the NAACP is the nation's oldest and largest civil rights organization. Its members throughout the United States and the world are the premier advocates for civil rights in their communities, conducting voter mobilization and monitoring equal opportunity in the public and private sectors. The Greater Springfield Branch was chartered in 1918 and has been at the forefront of the struggle for civil rights throughout the Western Massachusetts Region for over nine decades.
The MGM Springfield proposal has been exclusively endorsed by the Springfield Patrolman's Union, the Association of Springfield Firefighters, the Correctional Officers Union, the South End Citizen's Council, the Indian Orchard Citizen's Council and the Old Hill Neighborhood Council.
MGM Springfield is proposed for 14.5 acres of land between Union and State streets, and Columbus Avenue and Main Street. MGM is seeking the sole gaming license in Western Massachusetts. Since unveiling plans in August to develop MGM Springfield, an $800 million world-class residential, retail, dining and entertainment district, MGM Resorts continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to the entire City of Springfield and its existing infrastructure.
