MGM Resorts Executives Unveil Veterans' Benefits
Discuss Veterans' Jobs Training Program, Enhanced Military Benefits
SPRINGFIELD (MA) November 14, 2012 â€“ MGM Resorts International today hosted a breakfast meeting with local veterans to unveil the company's commitment to hiring veterans through its nationally recognized Boots to Business jobs training and enhanced military benefits programs.
The local veterans were given a special presentation of the MGM Springfield project and introduced to fellow veterans employed at MGM resorts in Las Vegas. They also heard from MGM executives about MGM's Boots to Business program and other military benefits offered at MGM properties.
Bill Hornbuckle, MGM Resorts Chief Marketing Officer and MGM Springfield President said, "At MGM, we believe that the greatest way to honor our country's veterans is through high quality job opportunities when they return home. The Boots to Business program acknowledges the sacrifices made by our veterans through their service while it simultaneously meets MGM's business recruitment needs by bringing hard working and highly motivated leaders into the company. More than 40 veterans from a variety of veterans' organizations in Springfield and surrounding communities attended the breakfast at the MGM Springfield Community Office on Main Street in Downtown Springfield. They were greeted by Hornbuckle as well as other MGM executives from Las Vegas and the local MGM Springfield team.
Sgt. Gumersindo Gomez, Executive Director of the Springfield Bi-Lingual Veterans Outreach Center of Massachusetts said, "I'm grateful to MGM officials for reaching out to veterans to discuss their nationally-recognized programs and appreciate their efforts in assisting veterans with training that helps them transition from military life into private-sector jobs at MGM resorts."
The local veterans heard about MGM's Boots to Business program, a unique recruiting and training program designed to hire veterans into MGM Resorts' management ranks. It was developed by MGM and the American Red Cross in 2011. The training and support program provides veterans with the opportunity to reintegrate and take their military leadership skills into entry-level management positions within the company.
If MGM wins the Western Massachusetts license, Hornbuckle said, "The Boots to Business program will be an important part of our recruiting effort for MGM Springfield. As it has done historically, MGM will place a significant emphasis on local and regional recruitment."
Veteran's participating in Boots to Business are provided with customized training to help translate their military leadership experience into corporate leadership skills. The 10-12 week program includes training to broaden communication and corporate management skills and includes diversity training. Each veteran is paired with a mentor colleague with military experience. The program was started in part because of the unique training required for veterans and to address the higher unemployment rates among returning military personnel.
Boots to Business grad Steve Matzeder, an assistant room service manager at MGM Grand, told his fellow veterans: "There are thousands of vets out there looking for jobs and MGM Resorts decided to take a stand and try to do something about that. They put their faith in us."
Matzeder, who recently left the Air Force after 17 years, added: "We've learned some extraordinary things. I know we plan to work hard so that the future of Boots to Business can continue to excel for others as it has for us."
